Nellis Air Force Base History. Nellis Air Force Base has been a Las Vegas fixture since 1941 when the Vegas Mayor Russell signed over property to the U.S. Army Quartermaster Corp for the purpose of developing a flexible gunnery school. Las Vegas was an ideal location for its ideal year-round flying weather, vast unpopulated territory and natural surroundings that included dry lake beds for emergency landings, and rocky hills for machine-gun and cannon firing operations. Nellis Air Force Base’s named was changed in 1950 in honor of 1st Lt. William Harrell Nellis, a Southern Nevada native killed in action in 1944.  [Top]
